Summary:
In 2010, over half the planet’s population live in towns. In 2030, three out of four people will be city-dwellers. Towns occupy 3% of the globe’s surface but consume 75% of its energy resources. If the aim is to offer everyone the means of travelling and working in towns, how can these means be developed harmoniously? How can we reconcile their irrepressible development with an equitable sharing of space? How can we effectively manage increasing flows while preserving a pleasant and healthy living environment in towns? How can we make urban transport pleasant and easy to use while giving it a social role?
JL: There are three main challenges for the town of the future: Firstly, dealing with the fact that energy is going to become expensive; Secondly, taking account of environmental constraints and reducing the ecological footprint of towns in absolute terms;
And thirdly, improving social cohesion, without which the town does not exist. Given these three factors, it is our ambition at Transdev to create ‘light towns’ and we want to work with local authorities in inventing this new concept.
We are a subsidiary of the CDC and are therefore at the dividing line between economic performance and general interest and, in public transport, this is exactly what’s needed.
JL off: Our aim is to be an architect of this travel policy, working alongside local authorities. We have a subsidiary, Transamo, which is dedicated to the design and management of major projects…
JL: Over the past 20 years, we have gained a great deal of experience in 9 countries across 3 continents and in extremely varied contexts; and we know now how to capitalise on this knowledge we have acquired and apply it to precise projects in a local context.
JL: Our second great strength is the fact that we have total control over a large-scale, dedicated-site project, from design to operation through all the intermediary phases.
Voix Off : As a subsidiary of Caisse des Dépôts and a specialist in public/private alliances, the Group is Europe’s 4th largest public transport operator and manages a turnover of 3.6 billion euros. As the European leader in demand responsive transport, Transdev is also a world leader in the tramway sector, operates in 10 countries and employs more than 47,000 staff.
JL OFF : Public transport is first and foremost a local matter. The integration and mobilisation of teams is an integral part of Transdev’s corporate plan and it’s something we pay particular attention to; our role is not the role of engineer but the role of operator in everyday life, with all the employees who contribute to this public service mission.
A pioneer with local elected representatives in the development of urban transport, Transdev was the driving force behind the comeback of the tramway in many towns, in a completely modernised version. Transdev also invented the BusWay concept, which combines the qualities of the Tramway with the ease of use of the bus. Two solutions with similar features, proposed to local authorities on the basis of several criteria: transport capacities, investment costs, implementation times and progressiveness of the programme.
On board, passengers benefit from an incomparable level of service… Operating on a dedicated lane, the network maintains a constant pace with a frequent and regular service: passengers experience no delays… A socially inclusive company, Transdev develops and implements the “street level” concept, making each mode of transport accessible to all. With the many specific facilities available, persons with reduced mobility are able to use the network without difficulty…
Tramway and Busway offer passengers a peaceful and safe way to travel… Stops are easily identifiable with a high level of equipment and ergonomic urban fixtures. Tramways and Busways are becoming a symbol of the completely successful integration of transport in the heart of the town.
A responsible company, Transdev has a long-term involvement in the development of the town. Whatever the solution used, the economic efficiency of the dedicated lane transport system allows us to control usage costs and contain the ecological impact of the project. Respecting the environment also means consuming less energy, with clean vehicles. It also means reducing emissions of pollutants, which is achieved by vehicles running at a regular speed, facilitated by priority at crossroads and flexible and controlled driving.
Ensuring inter-modality means above all listening to the needs of passengers. The objective: to simplify travel while integrating various complementary modes of transport. Making the town an exchange and meeting point, where travel can flow perfectly: this is the ultimate ambition of Transdev, public transport operator.
With this overall vision of dedicated-site transport, Transdev is a true architect of mobility for towns. This is a strategic role because it combines economic, societal and environmental aspects.
Transdev, the trusted partner of elected representatives for the town of the future…
